COAL IN ESTEVAN
Lignite coal has been mined commercially in the Estevan area since the early 1880s. With the arrival of the railway in the early 1890s, coal mining expanded quickly. Over the years, mines opened, closed and merged. Today, Westmoreland Mining is responsible for supplying coal to Boundary Dam and Shand power stations.
Lignite has been mined in the Coronach area for over 100 years. However, it was not until the mid-1970s that commercial coal mining began with the Poplar River Coal Mine. The coal mine feeds SaskPower’s Poplar River Power Station which was liewise built in the 1970’s. Today Today, Westmoreland Mining operates the Poplar River Coal Mine.
